 A Fresh New Look: Long Girls’ Haircut with a Hidden Red Pop

There is something special about giving someone a haircut when you know they want a change, but they don’t necessarily want to lose all their length.

Long hair can be beautiful, versatile and easy to wear, but after a while it can start to feel a little too familiar. Sometimes you don’t need a dramatic transformation. A good haircut, a little shape and a touch of colour in the right place can completely change the way the hair looks and feels.

Recently, I had the pleasure of creating a fresh new look for a young girl with beautiful, long brunette hair. Her hair already had plenty of length and a lovely natural-looking shine, but we wanted to give it more shape and personality while keeping that gorgeous length.

The final result was a soft, clean haircut with a beautiful surprise underneath — a vibrant red section that appears as the hair moves.

And honestly, I loved how it turned out!

Keeping the Length but Creating a Fresh Shape

When someone has spent a long time growing their hair, the last thing they may want is to sit in the salon and hear, “Let’s cut it all off!”

A haircut doesn't have to mean losing lots of length.

For this transformation, the goal was to keep the overall length while removing some of the heaviness and creating a cleaner, fresher shape. The ends were tidied and the haircut was carefully shaped so the hair could continue to look long and full.

Long hair can sometimes look a little flat when it has been growing without much shaping. Even when the hair itself is healthy, the ends can become uneven,
and the overall silhouette can lose its shape.

A good haircut brings that shape back.

I wanted the finished hair to look natural when it was worn down, but also have some movement when the hair was brushed, tucked behind the ear or moved from side to side.

That is where the hidden colour became even more exciting.

A Little Surprise Underneath

The brunette base gives this hairstyle a beautiful, natural appearance from the outside.

But underneath, there is a completely different story.

Her vibrated red colour to the lower section of the hair, creating a hidden or “peekaboo” effect.

I really like this technique because it gives someone the opportunity to have a fun colour without covering the entire head in a bright shade.

When the hair is sitting naturally, the red is partly hidden beneath the darker hair.

Then the moment the hair moves, the red appears.

It is almost like having two hairstyles in one.

One moment you see beautiful, glossy brunette hair. Then the hair moves and suddenly you get that gorgeous flash of red.

That little surprise makes the haircut much more interesting.

Why I Love Hidden Colour

One of my favourite things about hidden colour is that it doesn't have to be loud all the time.

Not everyone wants bright red, purple, pink or blue hair from roots to ends. Some people love the idea of fashion colours but still want their everyday hairstyle to look natural.

Hidden colour is a great way of finding that balance.

The top layer can remain natural-looking while the underneath section provides the creative part.

It can be as subtle or as dramatic as you want.

In this case, the red works beautifully against the brunette hair. The darker colour on top creates depth, while the red underneath gives the hairstyle energy and personality.

And because the red is concentrated underneath, it doesn't dominate the whole hairstyle.

It is there when you want to show it.

The Transformation From the Back

From the back, you can really see how the haircut and colour work together.

The long hair falls naturally over the shoulders, while the red sections become visible underneath.

I particularly like how the colour doesn't form one completely obvious block. As the brunette hair falls over it, different amounts of red appear depending on how the hair is sitting.

This makes the colour look more natural within the haircut.

It also means that styling can completely change the finished appearance.

Wear the hair straight and the red gives you subtle flashes of colour.

Move the hair to one side and more of the red becomes visible.

Put the hair into a ponytail or half-up style and the hidden colour can become much more noticeable.

So although the haircut itself is simple and wearable, there are lots of ways to have fun with it.

The Importance of the Haircut

Colour often gets all the attention when we talk about transformations, but the haircut is just as important.

Even the most beautiful colour can look less impressive if the shape of the hair isn't right.

For this look, I wanted the ends to feel fresh and healthy while keeping the overall length.

The haircut gives the hair a neat outline and allows the different sections of colour to sit naturally underneath.

There is something very satisfying about seeing freshly cut ends.

The hair immediately looks cleaner and more polished.

It also makes the colour underneath stand out more because the shape of the haircut helps frame it.

Keeping It Natural and Easy to Wear

One of the things I always consider when creating a hairstyle is what it will actually be like to live with after leaving the salon.

A hairstyle can look amazing for a photograph, but if it is difficult to manage every morning, it may not be the right haircut for that person.

This look was designed to remain easy to wear.

The hair can be worn straight and simple, just as it is shown in the photographs, or styled differently when there is a special occasion.

The hidden red colour adds the fun element without requiring a completely different everyday hairstyle.

That is one of the reasons I enjoy creating personalised haircuts rather than simply following one particular trend.

The best haircut is the one that suits the person wearing it.

A Small Change Can Make a Big Difference

Sometimes people think they need a huge transformation to feel like they have had a new hairstyle.

But this appointment was a good reminder that you don't always need to make a dramatic change.

The length stayed.

The natural brunette appearance stayed.

But after shaping the haircut and adding the hidden red colour, the whole hairstyle felt completely different.

That is what I love about hairdressing.

A relatively small change can make someone look in the mirror and think, “Yes, this feels fresh.”

And that feeling is often what we are really looking for when we book a haircut.

I think hidden colour is such a fun option for anyone who wants something a little different without completely changing their appearance.

You could choose red like this, or experiment with another colour depending on your personality and existing hair colour.

The beauty of the technique is that you can decide how much of the colour you want to reveal.

Keep it mostly hidden for an everyday look, or style the hair so the colour becomes the main feature.

And if you decide later that you want something different, you haven't completely changed your whole head of hair.

For this particular haircut, I think the red was a perfect choice.

The deep brunette and vibrant red create a beautiful contrast, while the long, clean haircut keeps everything looking polished.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed creating this new look.

The finished hairstyle combines three things I love about hairdressing: a good haircut, beautiful colour and a little bit of personality.

The long brunette hair still looks natural and elegant, but now there is a bright red surprise underneath that makes the hairstyle much more exciting.

It is proof that you don't always need to make a huge change to create something special.

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh haircut, carefully placed colour and a little creativity.

And when the hair moves and that red suddenly appears underneath...

That is the fun part. ❤️
